From his first year as an apprentice, Al knew that he wanted to be self-employed. As a mature 18-year-old, he set high standards for himself and achieved Apprentice of the Year each year during his apprenticeship as well as a number of individual course awards.

In 1985, at the age of 25, he started Breakwater Kitchens in partnership between himself and a colleague. Initially, the business operated from leased premises but by 27, Al had plans to build his own factory. The business had grown as a result of quality workmanship and the high aspirations of Al. The partners agreed it was time to purchase land and build their own factory and showroom.

Al's business partner decided to sell his share of the business in 2001 and Al, along with his wife Maria, bought him out and have continued to grow the customer base with Al as the driving force. Over time, the operation outgrew their second location and Al decided in order to increase the potential growth of the business, he needed a larger showroom and factory.

As a result, Al and Maria purchased land on the same street and had plans drawn for a larger showroom and factory. The current showroom was opened in 2009 and received the CMA Runner-Up Award for Best New Showroom. The business remains a family business and Al and Maria are supported by a team of 16 employees all working hard to provide excellent customer service and high-quality cabinetry and renovation projects.
